Example Program

Here is an example of what you may experience as an apprentice with ABB. Each apprentice has a unique schedule that is set out on commencement of the program. The schedule is subject to change so that you can take advantages of opportunities that present themselves such as work on major projects.

Year 1/2

8 Months - Low Voltage Systems – Learn about the fabrication of switchgear cabinets. Learn the tool handling skills required to machine bus bar and sheetmetal to the required fabricate a cabinet.

8 Months – High Voltage Power Products – Obtain experience in the mechanical aspects of high voltage outdoor air insulated switchgear. Install high voltage gas insulated switchgear onsite. Assemble and test high voltage instrument transformers and circuit breakers.

8 Months – Medium Voltage Service - Be paired with one of our service team and assist in the repair of a wide variety of electrical equipment including offsite travel. Work with the design team in specifying components. Take part in the fabrication and testing of Medium Voltage switchgear.

Year 3

8 Months – Transformer service - Install and commission large transformers for utility and industrial customers. Take part in the removal and decommissioning of old transformers. Strip, rewind and restore aged transformers to like new quality and improved performance.

4 months – Instrumentation, learn about this side of the business and the work with a range of different process orientated industries.

Year 4

Work in the division that you are most interested in. Focus on learning skills that can be best applied when you finish your apprenticeship. Gain specialist skills by taking on additional TAFE courses or take on greater responsibility with site work making use of your experience.
