The multidisciplinary mechatronics program is the central hub for motion-related technologies at ABB corporate research.
Projects are conducted in four research areas with the following missions:
Actuators and motion systems - Develop core technology for creating, transmitting and controlling motion in an optimized way. Understand the application requirements, and employ mechatronic engineering methods to overcome optimization constraints caused by domain silos.
Mechatronic engineering - Establish methodologies and tools that increase efficiency in developing and integrating actuators and motion systems.
Industrial motion applications - Understand and develop enabling technologies for applying robotic and other motion systems in factory automation, process automation and renewable energy generation.
Mobile and field robotics - Assess and develop technologies for robots to be used in nontraditional applications and environments, teleoperated, semi- or fully autonomous.
